Moments with God

Some of my daily readings have reintroduced me to Jacob in Genesis 28. Picture it, he finds a stone for a pillow, drifts off to sleep and dreams of ladder that reaches all the way to heaven. If this image doesn’t leave you speechless, then God saying to Jacob, ”know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go.” Jacob would call this place Bethel, House of God.

How do we discover/rediscover moments with God? 1) to realize that God moments happen all around us 2) embrace the sounds of silence.

For me, too often I miss the God moments because I focus too much on the next fire that has to be put out or even the loudest. God moments are found in the silence. I’ve never been a big fan of silence until it dawned on me that silence does not have to be a time of complete quiet. The sounds of silence can come from many different places: laughter of children, waves splashing against a ship and an older couple sharing a morning cup of coffee where no words were spoken, yet their eyes spoke volumes.

So the journey continues today to be present and to capture the God moments through nature, laughter, and the company of those we love and those we will encounter.

Blessings — Tom
