It’s been a short minute since I posted something on my blog. I could give you all kinds of excuses, but I will simply give you a one-word reason, “life”. I once again find myself amid transitions, new opportunities, and new horizons.
For me, horizons are part of daily life. Horizons are embraced each morning, and horizons are opportunities for reflection and giving thanks at the end of the day. I love how Google describes the symbolism of horizons as the place where the known and unknown meet. This place is not necessarily a destination, but a journey of opportunity, and reflection.
As I returned home from the Central Texas Conference, I gave thanks for an opportunity to learn more and meet new friends. Yes, we heard the word “horizon” mentioned many times. However, there was another word that was mentioned numerous times during the Ordination/Commissioning worship service, pray. Bishop Saenz said it in this way, “Pray, pray, pray, oh and pray!”
As I heard Bishop Saenz’s sermon the word pray was mentioned numerous times. I was immediately drawn to the image of the horizon and was reminded that as we embrace our new horizon, it must be surrounded by prayer. I must admit that Bishop Saenz’s sermon invited me to look within and examine my own prayer life. I didn’t like what I found, again that one word had gotten in the way, “life”.
Amid boxes, stacks of stuff, and chaos, I found an old friend, a book. This book was one of my favorite books that I leaned into during another season of transitions, change, and even new horizons. Dynamite Prayer by Rosario Picardo and Sue Nilson Kibbey is a great resource. As I found myself turning the well-marked pages, a word jumped out at me, “Dunamis”. This is a big, fancy Greek word found in the New Testament for resurrection power.
As we embrace new horizons during this season of transitions, change, and the unknown, may God’s Spirit break through our lives, our emotions, and even our preconceived ideas so that lives, communities, and the world can be transformed.
Remember these things:
- Pray, pray, pray, oh and pray!
- God Loves You!!
Tom

I always enjoy your words and I needed this more today than ever. Sometimes life keeps us for not doing what we should, and it has me lately. So I needed this nudge for me to get back on track to pray, pray and pray. I pray you and your family are all well. Pat
